Estadio Reinaldo Melo

Barinas, Venezuela

The ground sits on Avenida San Silvestre. It was built for the 2007 Copa América. A bust of Reinaldo Alfonso Melo Matheus stands at the entrance to a facility that was named after him. The surface is natural grass. What makes the place stand out is that it is quieter than any of the bigger stadiums in the capital, and it is used for second-division football rather than the top flight. The capacity is a matter of debate; some sources say 10,000, others 2,000. The highest crowd recorded here was 2,000 for a Segunda División match between Potros de Barinas and Atlético Socopó in February 2016. Llaneros FC and Mineros FC have also played there, and a sold-out crowd is rare enough to be noted when it happens. The stadium was rehabilitated in 2014 for the Feria Internacional de Turismo de Venezuela, which means it has seen more than just football. The roof was repaired, the lighting was updated, and the bleachers were brought back into use. The Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela held a closing gala concert there, which is not something you see at a football ground every week. The venue hosted the 2023 Juegos Nacionales for the Sub-13 and Sub-15 categories, and matches during the Copa Bicentenaria editions in 2013, 2014 and 2016. It is the home of Zamora FC B and is used by Inter de Barinas, formerly CD Hermanos Colmenárez.

The atmosphere is not the loud, electric kind you find in Rio or Buenos Aires. It is a working ground, where the players are still learning and the crowd is there because there is nothing else to go to. The line between a local fixture and a national championship match is thin here, and the players know it. The grass is green, the stands are full of people who have nowhere else to be, and the game goes on.
