Hans-Simon-Halle
Schwaig bei Nürnberg, Germany
Formerly: Dreifachturnhalle
The hall sits quietly at the edge of Schwaig bei Nürnberg, tucked into a sports complex that serves several local clubs. It does not pretend to be anything grander than what it is: a triple sports hall that opened in 1977 and has kept its structural bones through a renovation between 2010 and 2011.
The name honours Hans Simon, though the old title Dreifachturnhalle still lingered in some renovation papers before the hall settled on its current identity. Inside the doors the surface is indoor, but the exact material is not found in available sources.
The hall finds its rhythm through volleyball. The men's team plays there in the 2. Bundesliga, and the acoustics suit the sport: the ball bounces, the players shout, and the hall fills. Football uses the same floor in winter, when the outdoor pitches turn to mud and the players need somewhere to keep their fitness. Tennis and gymnastics take their turns as well, and karate rounds out the week.
The opening day brought an unusual guest. In 1977, when the club moved from Altdorfer Straße to this site, they hosted a friendly against Hertha BSC. The visitors won 8:1, and the match remains part of the hall's earliest memory.
The address, Mittelbügweg 11, places it next to other community facilities. The hall does not stand alone; it is part of a cluster of shared space.
