Work started in 1950; the gates opened on 20 July 1952. For its first four decades it carried the name of Petar Esov , and only in the 1990s did it become the Iskar .

The confusion worth clearing up first is geographical. More than one listing has placed the Iskar in Sofia, which is wrong — the address is number 155 on Tsar Boris III, postcode 2000.

The tenancy that defines the place began twenty years after the opening. Rilski Sportist moved in in 1972 and has been there since. The club runs the ground day to day, though it does not own it: the stadium belongs to the Bulgarian ministry responsible for physical culture and sport.
