Jahnstadion Regensburg

The stadium sits on the northern edge of Regensburg, on Franz-Josef-Strauß-Allee, and it belongs to the city rather than to a club. Day-to-day running falls to das Stadtwerk Regensburg, the municipal utility company — the same organisation that handles the city's public services also handles the turnstiles and the floodlights.

That ownership arrangement is the thing that separates it from most grounds of comparable size in Bavaria, where the club is usually the landlord and the debt is usually the club's. Here, the arena was built as municipal infrastructure, and the tenant plays in a building the city keeps on its own books.

The pitch is natural grass with undersoil heating, which in a city this far east matters from November onward: the ground does not lose fixtures to a frozen surface the way an unheated pitch would.

Two dates mark the opening, and they are a few days apart. The first friendly was played on 7 July 2015; the official opening followed on 10 July 2015. Football came before the ceremony.

The design came from Dr Stefan Nixdorf, with the planning work carried out by agn Niederberghaus & Partner GmbH of Ibbenbüren, in North Rhine-Westphalia — a practice brought in from the other side of the country for a building intended to last decades rather than a cycle or two.
