Long before it carried anyone's name, this ground belonged to Charilaou, the district where Aris built their pitch, and locals still call it by the old neighbourhood name rather than the one on the sign. The stadium opened in 1951 as simply the Aris Stadium, and stayed that way for over half a century, through a roof added over the west stand in 1972 and a north stand completed in 1975. It took until 2004 for the club to rename it after Kleanthis Vikelidis, who had a hand in getting the ground built in the first place.

That same year brought the stadium's biggest overhaul, timed to the Athens Olympics, when Charilaou served as a training base for the football tournament. A further refit followed in 2019.

The national side has used the ground sparingly over the years, and it still takes Greek Cup semi-final second legs even though the final itself is always played elsewhere. That distance from Aris's own fortunes showed in 2024, when the club's offices inside the stadium complex caught fire after a Cup final defeat — the pitch itself was untouched.
