La Bombonera (Alberto José Armando Stadium)

The name came before the architecture had settled into its final shape. When Boca Juniors opened the ground on 25 May 1940, three years after Slovenian architect Viktor Sulčič and engineer José Luis Delpini began drawing it up, only two tiers stood in place; the second deck on the north stand followed in 1941, and the third was not finished until 1953, alongside the floodlights.

The ground has carried three official names since then: Estadio Boca Juniors until 1986, Estadio Camilo Cichero for the following fourteen years, and Estadio Alberto J. Armando from 2000. The most substantial rebuild came in 1995 and 1996, under club president Mauricio Macri; a fourth stand replaced the old boxes and capacity rose to around 57,500.

Diego Maradona made his senior international debut here in 1977, and the national team has kept coming back for qualifiers and friendlies since. Not every visit has passed without incident: on 23 November 2018, River Plate supporters attacked the Boca team bus outside the ground ahead of the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final. Boca have since set out plans, running through 2025 and 2026, to reshape the stands further.
