It began as Lake Oval in 1878, a sprawling oval for cricket and the local rules football that once drew crowds in the tens of thousands. In 1995, the redevelopment turned the space into a rectangular soccer stadium called Bob Jane Stadium.

The layout shifted again later, when the state government funded a conversion into a multi-purpose athletics and soccer facility. The new configuration reduced the capacity and introduced an IAAF-approved synthetic running track surrounding the central field. Today, the main tenants are the local soccer team South Melbourne FC and Athletics Victoria.

The space still hosts major events, including the first VFL Grand Final in 1901 and a W-League Grand Final more recently.
