Mecklenburg County Sportsplex

The Sportsplex at Matthews earns its keep with a split personality: nine artificial pitches for club and youth football sitting alongside a proper grass stadium. Crown Legacy FC, Charlotte FC's MLS Next Pro side, plays here, sharing the ground with Charlotte Eagles of USL League Two and the Charlotte Lady Eagles of the WPSL.

The venue came together in two phases. The first opened in October 2013 with the artificial fields, a pavilion and a playground; the grass stadium followed as the second phase and was finished by 2017, bringing the total project to 32 million dollars. Charlotte Independence used it as their base for five seasons before shifting their main fixtures to American Legion Memorial Stadium in 2022, though they still return occasionally for U.S. Open Cup ties — a 2–0 win over Appalachian FC in 2023 among the more recent.

The record crowd dates to 15 June 2019, when 3,544 turned out to watch Charlotte Independence take on Birmingham Legion FC. What keeps the Sportsplex on the sport's radar now is less the crowd size than the turf itself: the grass surface picked up back-to-back SFMA Field of the Year honours in 2022 and 2023.
