The Merkur Spiel-Arena does not sit quietly in the city. The structure is heavy, but the lines are clean, and the stands rise in tiers that feel tight rather than distant.

Fortuna Düsseldorf call this home, and the club plays on natural grass despite the lack of sun. The surface needs replacing every few months. The capacity sits at 54,600, with nearly 10,000 places for supporters standing shoulder to shoulder. The terraces were changed in 2010 to bring the numbers up, and the press box grew larger for Euro 2024 when the roof needed new floodlights.

It has worn many signs on its side. The first was LTU Arena, then Esprit, and now Merkur Spiel-Arena. For big tournaments the name disappears entirely and becomes Düsseldorf Arena, a neutral shell for events that travel across borders. The Eurovision Song Contest filled the seats in 2011, and handball spectators set a world record here in January 2024 with 53,586 watching Germany play Switzerland. Football crowds have topped 50,000 when Fortuna secured promotion, and Ed Sheeran’s tour brought 190,718 through the turnstiles in a single weekend.

The roof is the main feature, a closed canopy that turns the stadium into an indoor arena when the weather breaks. The metal cladding catches the light, and the steel supports are visible through the gaps. It is a place built for events that need control, where the surface is managed and the noise stays inside. Fortuna play here every season, and the stands fill when the team needs support.
