Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani Stadium)

The ground exists because Daniel arap Moi asked China for one. On a visit in 1980 the Kenyan president requested funding and construction help; Chinese firms broke ground in 1982 and handed over the finished complex in August 1987, in time for the All-Africa Games it had been commissioned to host. The football final of those Games drew a crowd put at between 60,000 and 100,000 — the building then held around 65,000, and the counting was not exact.

It has never been only a football ground. Athletics Kenya uses it as a primary venue, and it took the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2021. The Safari Sevens is played here. In 2014, during Operation Usalama Watch, the stadium was used as a detention centre. On 13 September 2022, at the inauguration of William Ruto, a fence collapsed and at least eight people were hurt.

The renovation for the 2024 African Nations Championship, and beyond it the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, cost Sh3.5 billion by December 2024 and cut the capacity rather than raised it, to meet current safety and comfort requirements. The pitch was long a mix of Bermuda and Kikuyu grass and drew complaints for being uneven; the upgrade replaces it with pure Bermuda to CAF and FIFA specification.

The record football attendance is 60,000, set on 14 October 2018, when Kenya beat Ethiopia 3–0 in a 2019 AFCON qualifier. Gor Mahia and A.F.C. Leopards move their Mashemeji Derby here when the fixture outgrows their own grounds.
