Moi Stadium

Moi Stadium, also referred to as Kisumu Municipal Stadium, sits in the centre of Kisumu, Kenya, with the Polytechnic visible behind it.

The ground still carries the memory of 1988, when a concert by the Congolese legend Franco Luambo Makiadi drew a crowd so large that a stadium wall collapsed. Casualties followed, and the date remains the peak of the venue’s history, even though no football match has ever filled it to that level.

Renovation in 2012 changed the surface to artificial turf, making it the second football ground in Kenya to carry such a pitch, alongside Nairobi’s City Stadium. The Kenyan government and FIFA’s Goal Project funded the work, which also included a new running track and repairs to the stands. The capacity now stands at 5,000 to 6,000, a reduction from the 20,000 seats referenced in earlier records.

The stadium hosts the Kenyan Premier League and National Super League, with Kisumu All Stars F.C., Kisumu Hot Stars, and Real Kisumu F.C. as current tenants. Gor Mahia F.C. and Western Stima have occasionally used the ground as a secondary home for big matches. Plans are underway to expand the venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with KSh 800 million allocated for upgrades supervised by the Kenya Defence Forces and implemented by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The pitch is artificial, the surface laid down during the 2012 overhaul, and the running track remains a feature of the ground. Kisumu is the only stadium in the town.
