The ground has lived through a name change. It was originally the Arab Contractors Stadium. After the founder died in 1999, the city renamed it to honour him. The local club, Al Mokawloon Al Arab, plays its home matches here. They are not the only side to use the turf; other Cairo teams have passed through its gates, but the contract with the tenant club has kept the lights on for decades.

The atmosphere shifts when the Egyptian National Team arrives. Before the current generation of players, this venue hosted international friendlies against sides from around the continent. Al Ahly faced Orlando Pirates on the final night, needing a result to secure the title. The attendance reached the record capacity of 35,000, filling every seat in the concrete bowl. The home side won 2–0, with Mohamed Aboutrika scoring to extend his unbeaten run. The stadium has not hosted a final of that magnitude since, and the track remains unchanged, holding the memory of a night when the city held its breath.
