Palace of Sports Uruchye
Minsk, Belarus
Formerly: SKA Athletics Complex, SKA Sports Complex
The Palace of Sports Uruchye sits in the Uruchye residential district of Minsk. It opened in 1976 as a small indoor athletic manège for the Sports Committee of the Armed Forces, tucked inside a military town on the north-eastern outskirts of the capital.
The complex underwent a major reconstruction that began in the early 2010s and was completed in February 2016. The new facility was officially reopened with a capacity of 2,750 spectators. The parquet floor remains suitable for indoor team sports, and it is the home ground for SKA-Minsk, the men’s handball side, alongside Minskanka in volleyball and Stalitsa in futsal.
Its history is written in the crowds. The most notable attendance record occurred during the 1988/89 European Champions Cup final between HC SKA Minsk and Steaua București. Approximately 5,000 spectators attended despite the nominal capacity being around 2,500; fans occupied the running tracks surrounding the court. Recent high attendances include 2,700 spectators for Belarus national team matches against Romania and Poland in 2018.
The venue has hosted matches for the Belarusian national handball and boxing teams and the Baltic Handball League Final Four in 2019. It also staged boxing competitions during the European Games in June 2019. The address is 196 Independence Avenue. It has not had sponsorship-based name changes since the rebuild.
