Selhurst Park has stood on Whitehorse Lane since the mid-1920s. The pitch itself is a hybrid GrassMaster system, a practical solution chosen to maintain the surface under the wear of professional play. The stadium has hosted a variety of events beyond domestic league games, including an England international against Wales in 1926 and matches during the 1948 Olympics. Yet, for the local community, it remains primarily a football ground. The record attendance of 51,482 was set in 1979 during a promotion decider, a moment that still resonates with those who remember the occasion. The club has sold land at one end to a supermarket chain but has kept the stadium’s name unchanged throughout its history. There is no sponsor logo on the facade, just the brickwork and the steel gantries that hold the floodlights. The redevelopment of the main stand will eventually bring the capacity past 34,000, but until that work is finished, the ground feels smaller, more intimate, and perhaps more vulnerable to the elements.

The atmosphere shifts with the weather, particularly when the wind comes off the nearby fields. The architect Archibald Leitch designed the original layout, and while the details have been updated over time, the sense of enclosure remains. Supporters gather in the covered areas, waiting for the match to begin, indifferent to the construction noise that echoes around the perimeter. The stadium has survived wars, economic downturns, and relegations, but its current transformation is the most significant change in its long history.
