Shanghai Stadium sits in the Xuhui District. Built for the Eighth National Games of China, the venue officially opened in 1997. Its original form featured a running track that surrounded the pitch, but a renovation completed between 2020 and 2022 removed the athletics circuit and lowered the playing surface by 1.7 metres. The result is a football-specific ground with a pitch that adheres to FIFA dimensions of 105 by 68 metres.

The architecture is defined by its saddle-shaped roof, a structure supported by steel components sourced from the Jiangnan Shipyard. The design was led by Wei Dunshan, a figure known locally as the Father of Shanghai Sports Architecture.

Shanghai Shenhua moved into the stadium in 1998 and returned for the 2023 season after a period spent elsewhere. The ground hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics football preliminaries and the 2015 Supercoppa Italiana between Juventus and Lazio. A record crowd of 61,815 gathered on 1 May 2026 for a Chinese Super League fixture against Chengdu Rongcheng. The address remains 1111 Tiyuchang Ring Road, and the site has never carried a commercial sponsor name.
