Stadium
Sporthalle Gymnasium Wolfskuhle
Essen, Germany
The Sporthalle Gymnasium Wolfskuhle is not a cathedral of sport. It sits in the Steele district of Essen. Construction began in the spring of 1969, and by December of that year, the first section was ready. The complex followed, culminating in a full opening in February 1974.
Inside, the atmosphere is defined by proximity. The fixed seating holds 500 people. VV Humann Essen plays here, competing in the German 2. Bundesliga Nord.
Before that, in 1987, it served a different purpose entirely, acting as an emergency shelter after a fire at a nearby hospital.
The address, Pinxtenweg 6, marks the spot where a generation learned to play without a stadium.
