Stadion Miejski im. Grzegorza Lato
Mielec, Poland
Formerly: Stadion Miejski, Stadion przy Solskiego, Stadion Stali Mielec
On 15 September 1976, Stal Mielec drew Real Madrid, and 40,000 people got into a stadium built for about 30,000. Real won 2:1.
The main pitch was finished in November 1953 and christened with a 1:1 against Garbarnia Kraków; only in 1954 did it work as a proper stadium, with two banked earth terraces holding 7,000. The rebuild came much later, between 2010 and 2013. It was costed at 36.5m złoty, but replacing more of the old stands than planned pushed the bill to 41m, and the reopening waited until 31 August 2013.
Poland have played here four times, and never won by more than a goal: 2:2 with Albania in 1984 in World Cup qualifying, 1:0 over Azerbaijan in 1994 on the road to Euro '96, and friendly draws with Israel and Belarus. In 2025 it staged matches at the UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship.
The name is recent. Mielec council voted on 29 November 2023 to attach Grzegorz Lato, the Stal and Poland forward, to a ground that had simply been the Stadion Miejski; the plaque went up on 23 August 2024. In speech it is still the Stadion przy Solskiego.
