The ground on Calea Aurel Vlaicu has been on the same plot since the 1940s. Baron Francisc von Neumann, a Jewish Hungarian businessman in Arad , funded the construction that ran from 1940 to 1945 and, in 1945, backed the founding of the club that became UTA Arad . The stadium opened on 1 September 1946 and carries his name still.

Whoever drew it up looked to London: the original design took its cue from the Arsenal Stadium at Highbury. That first ground held 7,287. On 4 November 1970, 18,000 packed in for a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, which UTA lost 1–3; five weeks earlier, 17,000 had watched Feyenoord.

The municipality spent over €700,000 on repairs in 2006 — new seats, a VIP sector, a sound system — then added floodlights and a scoreboard in 2008.

Spectators first got in on 6 June 2021, for the women's Cupa României final, U Olimpia Cluj beating Heniu Prundu Bârgăului 1–0. The 2022 Supercupa României followed — Sepsi OSK 2–1 CFR Cluj, and the first match in Romania played with VAR. In 2025 the ground took the Cupa României final, CFR Cluj edging FC Hermannstadt 3–2.
