Stadiumi Jovan Asko

It is not much of a place, but it is the only one in Maliq. The ground sits on Rruga Hamit Dollani.

The surface is natural grass. There are no floodlights to push the evening back, so matches end when the light fails. The capacity is a matter of some debate; one source says a thousand, another says fifteen hundred. It does not matter much.

The name comes from Jovan Asko, a partisan hero who died in the war, though the details of his life have faded from the record. The club, KF Maliqi, plays here in the Kategoria e Dytë, the second division. They do not get many visitors. A team from Butrinti or Skrapari might come by, and the away end never stopped, even if there were only fifty people in it. The stadium has no running track and no fancy facilities to hide the fact that it is old. It dates back to the communist era, perhaps, but no one can say for sure. It just is.

It is not a temple of football. It is a patch of grass between two rows of houses where the wind goes straight through. When the ball is played long, it carries across the field without losing pace. The goalkeeper knows every crack in the concrete. The players know each other’s habits before the whistle blows. It is a place where the game is played without distraction.
