Memorial Field opened in 1931 as a school and civic ground, and for most of its life it stayed that — a place for Mount Vernon High School and local sport, nothing more. That changed with a $40 million rebuild completed in 2022, which replaced the old grass with synthetic turf and turned a municipal field into a proper venue with a second life.

The reopening did not settle what the stadium was for. Mount Vernon High School's Knights still play there, keeping the ground's original purpose intact, but the rebuilt facility also drew a professional tenant: Westchester SC, now competing in USL League One. Before the football club moved in, the venue's first competitive fixture after the renovation was actually a Major League Rugby match, on 26 February 2023 — an odd entry point for a stadium that would go on to host league football.

That absence says something about the building's character — it has never quite stopped being a school field, even with a resurfaced pitch and a professional side calling it home. At a capacity of 3,900, it was never built to be more than a community ground, and the renovation did not try to change that scale, only the surface and the standard of what gets played on it.
