It tells you this is not just a football ground.

The stadium opened in 1956, back when it was called Stalin Stadium. The name changed after de-Stalinization to the Central Stadium named after Stepan Shaumian. For years it served the local community, later becoming the Republican Stadium named after Stepan Shaumian during the era of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh. The surface changed in 2015 when artificial turf replaced the natural grass.

Since 2023, the ground has hosted matches for Qarabağ FK. The official attendance record is 4,590 spectators, set during an Azerbaijan Cup match against MOIK Baku on December 21, 2023. That match was the first official football game in the liberated territories in thirty years. The stadium was also renovated for the III Games of the Turkic States.
