Zakynthians Olympic Champions Ground
Zakynthos, Greece
Formerly: Zakynthians Olympic Champions Ground
The English name on the ground says who it is for: the Zakynthians Olympic Champions Ground honours the Olympic champions the island has produced, from antiquity to the present. Locally it is the Municipal Stadium of Zakynthos, Δημοτικό Στάδιο Ζακύνθου, and it sits near the centre of the town of Zakynthos, on the island of the same name in the Ionian Islands.
Two thousand is the working figure for the crowd, and only about five hundred of those places are seated — the rest watch standing. Plans to extend the stand have been drawn up more than once and have not been built: the economic crisis and then tax rules got in the way, so the ground has stayed much as it was, with the work left unfinished rather than abandoned.
What passes through it is a small club's calendar. A.P.S. Zakynthos took the Gamma Ethniki title in 2005–06, again in 2007–08, and once more in 2020–21, and played those home matches on this natural grass. The Greek Football Cup brings the bigger names over the water: the 2014–15 round here, and more recently ties against Asteras Aktor and Panargiakos. Super League 2 fixtures have been played on the same pitch.
No international fixture has been staged here, and no concert. With five hundred seats and a stand that was never finished, the cup draw is what changes the week.
