Celtic Hearts fell 3:5 to Hearts U21 in the Call Up Cup group stage on Tuesday evening at Tynecastle. The result saw the senior side lose to their own academy outfit in a match that defied expectations from the opening whistle.

J. Donkor opened the scoring for the hosts in the eighth minute before G. Stevenson doubled the lead just before the half-hour mark. And here's the thing — Hearts U21 responded immediately, with I. Hearts U21 showed superior efficiency with ten shots on target and a 67 per cent accuracy rate, while Celtic Hearts managed five shots on target at 26 per cent conversion. The statistics tell a simple story: one side kept knocking on the door, the other found a way through.

We had backed the home side at 64 per cent confidence, but the match broke in a different direction entirely. A youth team that had lost 5:0 to Sparta just days before showed they could play with the senior players and win.

The result leaves Hearts U21 with momentum they didn't have a fortnight ago. Celtic Hearts, meanwhile, have now lost three of their last five games and will need to tighten things up quickly.
