Olympique Béja and Progrès Sakiet-Ezzit played out a 1-1 draw in Ligue 1's fourth round on Sunday afternoon. The hosts took the lead just before the interval through N. Atoui, only for M. W. Djoumekou R. to level matters seconds later. By then the match had settled into a pattern neither side could quite break.
Atoui's strike came in the forty-fifth minute, putting Béja ahead after a first half where both sides had their moments. The visitors responded almost immediately. Djoumekou R. found the net in the forty-sixth minute, catching Béja on the transition as the teams changed ends. And here's the thing — that exchange in stoppage time defined the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Béja made several changes in the second half, bringing on C. Ouni and M. Omri in the sixty-fifth minute to try and find a winner. Progrès also reshuffled their back line, with Y. Azib and A. Sidibe among those to come off the bench. To be fair, neither side could quite string together the kind of pressure that would force a decisive moment. Yellow cards for both sides — two for Béja, three for Progrès — told the story of a game that grew increasingly tight.
The statistics paint a picture of possession without penetration. Béja held 58 per cent of the ball and registered 89 attacks, while Progrès managed 74 with just 42 per cent possession. Both sides landed six shots on target, but the visitors had six attempts off target compared to Béja's three. It was not a match decided by volume of chances so much as the quality of those that mattered.
The result leaves Béja rooted to fourteenth place with just two points from four games. Progrès remain in second, eight points clear of their opponents and still unbeaten. A draw that perhaps neither side would have wanted, but one that at least keeps both teams in touch with something approaching the form they need.
