Brønneb cruise into Cup second round with Rosseland rout
Brønneb dispatched Rosseland 3-0 in the first round of the Norwegian Cup at Rosselandsbanen on Tuesday evening. The visitors had been in better recent form, winning three of their last five matches while Rosseland had lost both previous encounters against Brønneb and Viking. To be fair, the away side did not need to chase the game for long.
Brønneb took advantage of a quiet opening period and broke the deadlock in the fifty-seventh minute through N. Strunck. The goal shifted the complexion of the match considerably. Rosseland could not find their feet after that, and Brønneb doubled their advantage fifteen minutes later when L. Sodal found the net.
By then the result was already beyond doubt. L. Qvigstad added a third in the eighty-eighth minute to seal the victory. The hosts managed nothing in return, failing to register a single shot on target throughout the contest.
The statistics tell a blunt story. Both sides were credited with fifty per cent possession, but possession means little when neither team can create chances. Rosseland recorded zero corners, zero shots off target, and zero shots on target. The visitors showed the same numbers, though their three goals suggest they took what came their way.
The loss leaves Rosseland with a record to rebuild. They had lost 3-1 to Brønneb in May 2023 and 6-1 to Viking the year before. This result adds a third defeat to that recent run against the same opponents.
For Brønneb the victory extends a positive sequence. They beat Sanne 1-0 on Wednesday, then vanquished Moss 2-1 and Sogndal 2-0. Only their trip to Strømsgodset on the first of August had ended in defeat, and even that was a narrow two-goal loss.
The Norwegian Cup now offers Brønneb another opportunity. Rosseland have nothing to lose at this stage, but the gap between the sides was clear from the opening minutes. The visitors will hope to carry this momentum into the next round.
