Umm Salal saw off Al-Kharaitiyat 1:0 in the opening Group Stage match of the QSL Cup on Sunday. The single goal came in the 48th minute to decide the contest at home soil. It was a tight affair from start to finish, with neither side able to find a second strike despite creating opportunities.
And here's the thing — the goal arrived just after the interval, catching both sides slightly off-guard. Umm Salal's striker finished a chance that had been building throughout the first half. By then, the visitors had already settled into their rhythm on the ball, but the hosts' defensive shape held firm against the pressure.
The statistics tell a familiar story. Al-Kharaitiyat dominated possession at 57 per cent and registered more attacks with 87 compared to 66. Yet Umm Salal were sharper in front of goal, converting 70 per cent of their shots on target while the visitors managed 63 per cent. Seven shots on target for the hosts versus five for the away side — and only one found the net for either.
To be fair, both teams were disciplined. Two yellow cards each, no reds, and neither side committed many offside infractions. The visitors threw in 25 times against 14 for the hosts, reflecting their approach of keeping the ball and probing for openings. But probing doesn't always lead to penetration.
Umm Salal's recent form provides context for this result. They came into the match off a heavy 5:1 defeat to Al-Khor on September 7th, but had shown resilience with a 2:1 win over Al-Mesaimer and a draw against Qatar U23. Al-Kharaitiyat, meanwhile, had drawn 1:1 with Al-Mesaimer on their last outing and were coming off a comfortable 3:1 victory against Al-Khor.
In Group Stage terms, this is only the beginning. Both sides remain level on points with one match played, but the goal difference now separates them. Umm Salal sit on positive territory while Al-Kharaitiyat will need to find a way to convert their dominance into goals if they want to progress.
