About the player
Lewis Schouten joined the AZ Alkmaar academy in 2014, having previously come through the ranks at HSV Heiloo, and spent the following decade working his way up through the club's youth sides. The clearest marker of that progress came in 2023, when he was part of the AZ Alkmaar squad that won the UEFA Youth League, beating Hajduk Split 5–0 in the final.
Schouten made his senior debut for Jong AZ in January 2022 and continued to play for the reserve side over the following seasons while training with the first team. He was formally promoted to AZ Alkmaar's first-team squad in July 2023, though it took until February 2025 for his Eredivisie debut to arrive, coming on against Willem II.
His development has also been recognised at international level: Schouten has represented the Netherlands at both under-18 and under-19 level, earning three caps for each age group.
In July 2025, he moved to Excelsior on loan for the 2025–2026 season. At 1.91 metres, Schouten has been used mainly as a centre-back, with the physical profile to match, though he has also been deployed in midfield during his time in AZ's youth system.
