About

The Johan Cruijff Schaal, commonly known as the Dutch Super Cup, is an annual football match organized by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB). Serving as the curtain-raiser for the Dutch football season, it is contested between the winners of the previous season's Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup. If a club wins the domestic double, the opponent is the Eredivisie runner-up. The format is a single match, typically played in August. There is no promotion or relegation as it is a one-off trophy match. The winner does not automatically qualify for European competitions; European spots are determined by league position and KNVB Cup victory. However, the match is significant for prestige and as a season opener.

The tournament was first held in 1949 but was not played regularly until its revival in 1991. Between 1949 and 1991, only one edition was held; a planned 1989 edition was cancelled due to security concerns. The tournament was known as the PTT Telecom Cup from 1991 to 1993, then reverted to Super Cup before being renamed the Johan Cruijff Schaal in 1996 in honor of the legendary player. PSV Eindhoven is the most successful club with 15 titles, followed by Ajax with 9 and Feyenoord with 5. The current holder is AZ Alkmaar, who won their second title in 2026 by defeating PSV Eindhoven 4–0. AZ's previous win was in 2009.

The competition sits below the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup in terms of prestige, often viewed as a minor trophy, but it distinguishes itself from other Dutch competitions by being a single match between the two primary domestic champions, whereas the Eredivisie is a 18-team league and the KNVB Cup is a large knockout tournament involving lower-tier teams.
