About

The Tweede Divisie operates as the third tier of the Dutch football pyramid under the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB). It serves as the highest level for amateur football, having been refounded in the 2016–17 season after merging with the former Topklasse structure. The league currently stands distinct from the fully professional Eerste Divisie and the fourth-tier Derde Divisie, which excludes reserve sides.

This competition features a double round-robin format involving eighteen clubs. The squad includes top amateur sides alongside reserve teams (Jong teams) of professional entities. The promotion pathway differs significantly from other levels. Standard amateur teams cannot move up to the second tier. Reserve sides only gain entry if the lowest-ranked Eerste Divisie reserve finishes in the bottom two positions, or through playoffs if they place between eleventh and eighteenth. Relegation rules send the sixteenth-placed standard team to the Derde Divisie, while those in fourteenth and fifteenth enter a playoff.
