Spakenburg

In the spring of 2023, a club that plays only on Saturdays walked into the Dutch Cup and beat two Eredivisie sides in a row — FC Groningen away, then FC Utrecht away, 4-1. Spakenburg went on to face PSV in the semi-final and lost 2-1, but by then Dwayne Green had already done something no amateur player had managed before him: he scored in a KNVB Cup semi-final. It made Spakenburg only the third amateur club to reach that stage of the competition since Dutch football turned professional.

The Saturday fixture list is not a scheduling quirk. It is written into the club's statutes and into its agreement with the Dutch football federation, a condition tied to the religious convictions of its members in the Bible Belt town of Spakenburg. The club traces back to 1931, when a group calling itself Stormvogels first got organised; by 1935, playing as Windvogels, it won a third-division title without losing a match. The current name and identity came in 1947, after a merger with the local gymnastics association Lycurgus, and that same year the club won the right to compete in the top flight for Saturday football.

Spakenburg has built a reputation as a landing place for footballers whose professional careers stalled — injuries, discipline, bad timing — but who could still play at a level well above the amateur norm. Vince Gino Dekker came through Ajax's academy from the age of six before joining in 2019; Jordi Bitter arrived from the same pipeline the year before. The club has also produced its own line of coaches: Chris de Graaf and Jorg Hartog, both former players, took charge together and led the side to the Tweede Divisie title in 2023/24.

Home games are played at Sportpark De Westmaat, on the side reserved for the Blues, in front of 6,600 supporters. Spakenburg sits in the Tweede Divisie as reigning champions of that division, with the Saturday amateur game still the frame around everything the club does.
