GVVV Veenendaal

When a group of footballers in Veenendaal formed a club in November 1947, they had no way of knowing the name they chose would collide with history. They called it Gelderse Sportvereniging Veenendaal, shortened a year later to GVV. That abbreviation, it turned out, already belonged to a Utrecht club — one that had stopped existing in 1910, folded into the merger that produced FC Utrecht. The clash was enough to force a second rename in 1949, and the club has carried the extra V ever since: GVVV. There was no lineage to inherit from Utrecht, no continuity beyond the coincidence of initials — just a Veenendaal side working out what to call itself.

The club has stayed at that level ever since, competing in Dutch amateur football rather than the professional pyramid. Its strongest spell came either side of the millennium's turn, with Hoofdklasse titles in 1996/97 and 2010/11 bracketing an Eerste Klasse championship won twice, in 1984/85 and 2004/05. In the KNVB Cup, GVVV's furthest run took them to the quarter-finals in 2011/12, a rare brush with the professional game for a club that otherwise plays its football away from it.

Financial trouble caught up with GVVV in the 2010s, forcing a restructuring that the club worked through by 2016. The pattern repeated on the pitch a few years later: relegation out of the Tweede Divisie in 2021/22, followed by a return to that level in 2023. Home matches are still played at Sportpark Panhuis, in front of a ground that holds 4,500.
