Those roots run through Philips. The team began life as a works side for employees of the electronics company, and the name it still carries, Philips Sport Vereniging, has never changed even as the football operation was hived off into its own company in 1999. The club was founded on 31 August 1913.
The red and white shirts trace back to a story about the club's first chairman, Jan Willem Hofkus, who is said to have picked the colours after looking at a red raspberry drink next to a white notepad. Philips Stadion , home since 1910 and holding 35,119 today, took its current shape after the corner sections were completed in 2002.
Willy van der Kuijlen stayed the course instead, scoring 310 goals across 18 seasons to remain the club's all-time top scorer.
