Philips Stadion

Football arrived at this ground before Philips did. The pitch on Frederiklaan dates back to 1910, and the club opened it formally as a football venue in 1913 — long before the electronics company's name became attached to it as Philips Sportpark, and long before PSV itself grew into the tenant everyone now assumes it always was.

The stadium carried an athletics track for skaters and runners for close to two decades, laid down in 1941, before the club tore it up in 1958 to widen the pitch. That single decision says something about priorities here: Eindhoven kept the ground working for football rather than freezing it as a multi-purpose relic.

The record crowd goes back to a Eredivisie derby, PSV against Ajax in October 2005, when 34,700 packed in — just short of the ground's current capacity of 35,119. UEFA has trusted the stadium with genuine occasions: it hosted matches at Euro 2000 and, six years later, the UEFA Cup final.

Music has found a home here too. Carmina Burana filled the ground in 1992, Eros Ramazzotti played in 1994, and Guus Meeuwis has turned it into an annual fixture since 2006 — a local singer drawing the kind of crowd that away fans never see.

The surface today is hybrid grass, a modern concession on a pitch with over a century of use behind it.
