About the player
Nicolas Pays' route to Ligue 1 ran through the French regional leagues. After coming through Clermont Foot 63's youth setup and a season with the club's reserve side, he stepped back down to Régional 1 with US Blavozy in 2022-2023, where he won the Coupe de la Haute-Loire before returning to Le Puy Foot 43 for a season and a half in Championnat National 2.
Montpellier HSC signed him as a free agent the following month, and he put pen to paper on his first professional contract, running to June 2027. The jump from fourth-tier football to Ligue 1 came quickly: he made his top-flight debut on 9 February 2025, coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat to RC Strasbourg.
