Dunkerque hosted Montpellier in the third round of Ligue 2 on Friday evening, and the visitors claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to Nicolas Pay's second-half strike. The result keeps Montpellier unbeaten in four league outings while extending Dunkerque's mixed start to five games.
Yael Mouanga saw yellow before the break, and the game opened up after the restart. Pays found the net in the fifty-fourth minute, and Montpellier kept their side in it through a disciplined defensive display. By then the hosts had pushed forward, but the away back line held firm.
Dunkerque dominated possession at 58 per cent and registered 124 attacks, yet only created one big chance. Montpellier, with 42 per cent of the ball, produced four big chances and converted one of them. The visitors shot with greater accuracy, landing five on target from ten attempts.
Both sides exchanged several substitutions in the second half. Dunkerque brought on Victor Mayela and Egor Prutsev together at half-time, then rotated further around the hour mark. Montpellier responded with changes of their own, bringing on Nabil Mukiele in the sixty-ninth minute.
Dunkerque sit tenth with five points from five matches, having drawn three and lost two. Montpellier sit fourth with eight points from four games, unbeaten in all competitions this season. The gap between them in the table remains tight, and Saturday's fixture could shift things.
