Two neighbourhood sides in Dunkerque, Stade Dunkerquois and Union Sportive de Malo-les-Bains, put themselves together in August 1919. The merger held its name for less than a decade. Racing Club de Dunkerque joined in 1927, and Amis de la Balle Dunkerquoise followed in 1934, when the club took the name Olympique de Dunkerque and, the following year, turned professional and reached the Second Division. A further merger with Dunkerque Étudiant Club in 1954 produced Union Sportive de Dunkerque.

The current name, Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque, dates to 1987, adopted after bankruptcy when the local municipality stepped in with financial backing. The club has since worked its way back down the pyramid more than once, dropping as far as the fifth tier in 2002, and has climbed out again. In 2023, ownership passed to Turkish businessman Yüksel Yıldırım and his Amissos group.

Dunkerque plays at the Stade Marcel-Tribut, opened in 1933 and reduced by renovation between 2018 and 2022 to a capacity of 4,933.
