Blue and yellow belong to the town of Pau before they belong to its football club — and Pau FC took them up only when it rebuilt itself from scratch in 1995.

That earlier club had been founded on 19 May 1959 under president José Bidegain, tracing its own roots back further still to an amateur side called Bleuets de Notre-Dame in 1920. When FC Pau collapsed under financial strain, Bernard Laporte-Frey and Joël Lopez — a former goalkeeper and the club's all-time leading scorer — put together the club that exists now. Pau FC still treats the 1959 side as its predecessor, though in 2022 it changed the founding year on its badge to 1995.

The club plays at the Nouste Camp, which opened on 14 September 2018 and holds 4,031 people; it was widened to meet Ligue 2 requirements.

One title is still missing from the list. Pau finished the 2019-20 season top of the third-tier National table when the pandemic brought it to an early halt, and went up automatically — but the French federation never awarded the championship itself.
