Before the name on the shirts was AS Nancy Lorraine, there was Union sportive Frontière, formed in the city in 1910. The club became Association sportive Lorraine in 1928, and it was not until 1967, when the side turned professional, that it took the name it still carries. That later year is the one stamped on the crest, even though the club's own history runs back further than that.

The crest also carries a thistle, the plant used in the heraldry of Lorraine, and it gave the club its nickname, Les Chardons. Red and white have been the colours throughout, and supporters and the local press still call the side Rouge et Blanc.

Nancy's one Coupe de France came in 1978, a 1-0 final win over Nice settled by a goal from Michel Platini. The League Cup followed decades later, in 2006, again against Nice, this time won 2-1. Between those two finals sits a different kind of record: Nancy have won the second division five times, in 1975, 1990, 1998, 2005 and 2016.

Home games are played at Stade Marcel-Picot, which holds 20,087.
