Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city. The Auckland Rugby Union sat among the four founding unions when the New Zealand Rugby Football Union came together, its charter dated 20 April 1883, and the province built from there into the most successful in the country's history.

That standing rests less on any single trophy than on a stretch few provinces have matched: 61 successful defences of the Ranfurly Shield between 1985 and 1993, part of a record 16 shield wins overall. National titles followed in clusters rather than one at a time — eleven under the old National Provincial Championship banner through the 1980s and into the mid-1990s, then an Air New Zealand Cup in 2007. Among the players who carried that era, Jonah Lomu remains the name most tied to Auckland's rugby.

A title drought stretched for eleven seasons before Auckland won the Mitre 10 Cup in 2018, a rebuild credited to coach Alama Ieremia and one that reconnected the union with the standard it had set for itself decades earlier. Waikato remains the rivalry that matters most, sharpened by all those shield defences fought against unions trying to take it off them.

Through it all, the union has kept returning to the same measure it set in 1883: whether Auckland still leads the provinces it helped bring into being.
