For six seasons in the 1920s, no rugby side in New Zealand could take a piece of silverware away from Napier. Between 1922 and 1927, Hawke's Bay held the Ranfurly Shield.
The union itself predates that golden run by decades: formed in 1884, it is the oldest provincial body outside New Zealand's four main centres, and Napier has stayed its home ever since. The white jersey with black hoops gave the side its nickname, the Magpies, and McLean Park has been their ground throughout.
A short-lived merger with Manawatū as the Central Vikings in the late 1990s left behind the province's sharpest rivalry, renewed every time the two sides meet.
