On 8 December 1940, the Bears beat the Washington Redskins 73–0 in the NFL Championship Game. It remains the most lopsided result in the league's history. The Bears ran the T-formation, with Sid Luckman at quarterback, and the Redskins had no answer to it.
He took over a company side, the Decatur Staleys, formed in 1919 for a starch manufacturer in Decatur, Illinois. He moved it to Chicago in 1921 and renamed it the Bears a year later. He was owner and coach, and he was still a central figure when the last of eight pre-Super Bowl championships came in 1963.
The other season the club is defined by is 1985. Mike Ditka's Bears went 15–1 and beat the New England Patriots 46–10 in Super Bowl XX. It was the club's only Super Bowl win. Walter Payton, Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers all played for the club, and the Bears have inducted more people into the Pro Football Hall of Fame than any other team: 37, coaches and contributors included.
The Bears have played at Soldier Field since 1971, apart from 2002, when the stadium was rebuilt; it now holds 62,500. The Green Bay Packers series is the oldest and most-played in the NFL, and the Bears have had the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings to contend with every year as well.
Since Halas's era the Bears have won one championship, in 1985. They have not won a second Super Bowl.
