The National Football League operates as a closed franchise model at the apex of American football, distinguishing it from European systems that utilise promotion and relegation. Established in 1920, the organisation began as the American Professional Football Association before adopting its current title two years later. It functions without a tiered structure based on performance; instead, expansion is managed through significant financial fees controlled by owners.
The competition features 32 teams arranged into two conferences: the AFC and the NFC. Each conference comprises four divisions. The regular schedule runs for 18 weeks, requiring clubs to play 17 matches. Following this period, a single-elimination tournament determines the finalists. Fourteen teams qualify for this stage, with seven drawn from each conference. The final contest, known as the Super Bowl, pits the AFC winner against the NFC champion.
Historical success is recorded differently across eras. The Green Bay Packers possess the highest number of total championships, reaching 13 victories when including titles awarded before the modern era began. Regarding the Super Bowl specifically, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots share the record, each securing six wins. In the most recent season, the Philadelphia Eagles claimed the title after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs. The league employs a hard salary cap to maintain competitive balance. An annual draft allocates collegiate players to franchises in reverse order of their previous season's performance, a mechanism designed to support parity among participants.
Unlike many international sports bodies, the NFL does not allow teams to move between tiers based on merit. This structural rigidity defines its identity compared to other major global sports leagues. The format prioritises stability over mobility, ensuring that membership remains static unless new franchises are purchased by wealthy investors. Player acquisition relies heavily on this draft system rather than free transfer markets common elsewhere.
The league's governance ensures that no club faces demotion regardless of results. This contrasts sharply with open pyramid structures found in countries like the United Kingdom or Germany. The focus remains on maintaining a fixed number of participants while managing financial disparities through collective bargaining agreements.
