«Chiefs»
Lamar Hunt built the franchise in Dallas in 1959 as one of the founding clubs of the American Football League. Hunt moved the team to Kansas City in 1963 and renamed it the Chiefs, a nod to former mayor H. Roe Bartle.
Two more AFL championships followed, in 1966 and 1969, built around a defence so feared it earned the name "Redwood Forest." When the AFL merged into the NFL in 1970, the Chiefs carried their momentum straight into Super Bowl IV and beat the Minnesota Vikings. Len Dawson quarterbacked that team.
Two years later the Chiefs moved into Arrowhead Stadium, the first NFL ground built with arrow-shaped yard markers. That changed with the arrival of Patrick Mahomes , whose partnership with tight end Travis Kelce under head coach Andy Reid turned "Legion of Zoom" into the nickname for an offence that has carried Kansas City to three more Super Bowl wins since the 2019 season, including back-to-back titles for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.
The rivalry with the Denver Broncos still frames the AFC West race each year, and Arrowhead, now known as GEHA Field, holds just over 76,000 for it.
