Nobody in East Rutherford talks about the Jets without bringing up the Giants, the team they have shared a stadium with since 2010 and a city with far longer, in a rivalry the league markets as the Snoopy Bowl. It is the New England Patriots, though, who have done more to shape the modern club. Miami and Buffalo fill out an AFC East that has rarely gone the Jets' way.
The franchise did not start as the Jets at all. It entered the American Football League in 1959 as the Titans of New York, and by 1962 owner Harry Wismer had run it into bankruptcy. David "Sonny" Werblin bought the club for a million dollars the following year and renamed it for the jet age, a nod to the city's aviation links that also gave the team a clean break from a losing name. Werblin's rebuild paid off in January 1969, when quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed victory over the Baltimore Colts and then delivered it, 16–7, in Super Bowl III — the first time an AFL club had beaten the NFL on that stage. Namath was named the game's MVP, and coach Weeb Ewbank, who built the roster around him, is remembered for that single afternoon as much as for anything else in his career.
Little since has matched it. A division title arrived in 1998 under Parcells. Nothing has carried the club back to the playoffs since.
The team trains in Florham Park but plays before 82,500 people at MetLife Stadium.
