Bob Griese came back from a broken leg in December 1972 to steer a team that had not lost all year, and by the time the season ended in Los Angeles it was still unbeaten — 17–0, the only perfect season the National Football League has recorded.
Miami came into the American Football League in 1966 after the franchise was awarded the previous August to a group fronted by attorney Joe Robbie and entertainer Danny Thomas, who paid $7.5 million for it. The name itself was put to a public vote that autumn and drew 20,000 entries. Robbie stayed in charge until 1990; Wayne Huizenga took full ownership in 1994, and Stephen Ross has held the club since 2009.
The division has otherwise been the club's most consistent hunting ground, claimed thirteen times, mostly against New England and the Jets in a rivalry that has run the length of the AFC East's history. In 2024 the roster was pulled apart again, with Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb both released as the front office reset the team once more — a reminder that the Dolphins have spent as many years rebuilding as they have contending since Griese and Csonka last lifted a trophy.

Falcons QB Penix trained fully but Cooper Rush kept the starting spot; Tua Tagovailoa may also return from an oblique injury for Thursday's Packers game.
The ex-Dolphins QB says Miami's $180M in dead cap and tough schedule make an 0-17 finish realistic, even after week one's loss to the Raiders.
