«Green Terror»
Western Maryland College put a team on the field in 1891 against Gettysburg, and the college changed its name to McDaniel in 2002 while the Green Terror kept theirs.
The program's claim on the game's technical history rests on two plays: Carl "Molly" Twigg patented the forward pass in 1908, and Eugene "Stoney" Willis introduced the shovel pass in 1932. Bill Shepherd carried the name into it anyway, going on to win the 1935 NFL Championship with the Boston Redskins after a career at Westminster that included an Orange Bowl invitation the team turned down in 1934 so Shepherd could play in the East-West Shrine Game instead.
Rip Engle played here before he went on to coach Penn State, and for decades the college doubled as the Colts' and then the Ravens' summer training camp, right up until 2011.
The Centennial Conference is where the recent titles sit — four outright between 1997 and 2000, three shared afterward, nothing since 2004.
