Mariners

Ritchie Field has never seen a season quite like 2009: Maine Maritime took the New England Football Conference's Bogan Division and rode that form into the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III playoffs, reaching the second round. The team peaked on 1 November that year, beating the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 76–49 while piling up 746 yards of total offense, still a Division III single-game record. Earlier conference titles, won outright in 1972, 1980 and 1993, came before the league split into divisions, with a co-championship following in 1994.

The program exists because the academy that houses it does. Maine Maritime Academy was founded in 1941 by an act of the Maine Legislature, and its football team took the field for the first time in 1946 under head coach John Hoctor. Castine sits on a peninsula on the Maine coast, and Blue and gold have stayed the colours since, and Ritchie Field holds 1,500 — enough for a campus this size.

The financial strain of the pandemic shut the program down in 2020. Bringing it back took four years: practice resumed in 2024, and the Mariners returned to full varsity play in 2025 in the newly formed Conference of New England. A division title to match 2009, or a return to the playoffs, has not followed yet.
