Golden Bears

Western New England University fields no scholarship powerhouse in Springfield, Massachusetts — the football programme was set up in 1970, and it has stayed there ever since. The Golden Bears wear blue and gold and play out of Golden Bear Stadium, a 1,500-seat ground that suits a college crowd rather than a paying one.

Conference titles have come in short runs rather than one long stretch: three championships in the New England Football Conference across 2011, 2015 and 2016, then a move into the Commonwealth Coast Football conference that brought three more, in 2017, 2018 and 2019. That second spell was the programme's high point — six Division III playoff appearances in total, all of them falling inside those two title runs, though only the 2016 postseason produced a win, a 44–27 victory over Alfred. Everywhere else in the playoffs, the Golden Bears went out at the first attempt.

Bowl games tell a similar story of one win balanced against one loss: a 66–41 defeat of Maine Maritime in the 2010 ECAC Bowl, then a 63–35 loss to Merchant Marine in the 2021 New England Bowl, reversed two years later when Western New England beat UMass Dartmouth 37–7 in the same fixture.

The name most attached to the program's defence is Braxton Etuka, a cornerback who played from 2013 to 2016 and still holds the record for interceptions with 21 — a tally built across the same years that carried the team to its first NEFC titles and its only playoff win.

None of it changes what the programme was put together to do in 1970: give a small university in Springfield a football team of its own.
