Captains

Matt Kelchner coached the Captains for the first 16 seasons of their existence, from 2001 to 2016, and finished with a record of 103 wins and 50 defeats. He inherited a programme the university's Board of Visitors had approved in December 1999, and he had no history to lean on. The team was shared champion of the Dixie Conference in both of its first two seasons, 2001 and 2002.

The USA South Athletic Conference followed, and Kelchner's sides won it in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. The 2008, 2011 and 2014 ones were outright.

The national playoffs have been harder. The Captains have reached the Second Round of the NCAA Division III tournament four times, in 2003, 2004, 2014 and 2025, and have not gone beyond it. Their playoff record stands at 3–12, and they have never won the national title.

After Kelchner came Art Link, who won 24 and lost 21 between 2017 and 2021. Paul Crowley took over in 2022 and has won the New Jersey Athletic Conference outright twice, in 2023 and 2025. The second of those came with a Second Round run in the playoffs.

The player most associated with the Captains is Dean "Mojo" Rawley Muhtadi, who spent 2004 and 2005 at Christopher Newport before transferring to Maryland. He later signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers and then the Arizona Cardinals.
