The football department split away from SC Karl-Marx-Stadt on 15 January 1966 to form an independent club. Michael Ballack came through between 1983 and 1994, Ralf Fährmann between 1998 and 2003. The U19 side that now carries the club's sky blue and white plays out of the Stadion an der Chemnitztalstraße, a 2,800-capacity ground separate from the first team's home.
